Questions & Answers

1. Parts of Northern California have just been through devastating fires. Are we as vulnerable and are we well prepared?

Marin County is vulnerable due to the nature of homes in and around flammable vegetation. Major fires have occurred in the past in Marin, and likely will in the future. All fire agencies in this county are always striving for fire safety, especially in the fire prone zones. Novato Fire has always taken a pro-active approach to fire prevention in wildland areas of our community. They have encouraged citizen participation in projects such as "chipper days" where citizens clear their property of dead flammable vegetation, and trimming low hanging branches on trees, etc. Using grant money and matching funds chippers are then brought in to grind this collected vegetation and haul it away to a suitable site. Before I retired, I established these projects, and funding, as part of my responsibility as Novato Fire Deputy Fire Marshal in many areas of Novato, including Black Point/Green Point, Canyon Road, Wildhorse Valley, and others.
