? 1. What is the most important changes you would like to see in your district and why?

Answer from Lee Hamovitz:

We need a board that asks, every day, "How was school today?" It's a question that points directly to the role and responsibility of the board and the district. And it turns on the word "today."

You get only one chance to educate a child. Children go to school just once in their life, they grow up, and then they're gone.

For both the district and the board, a sense of urgency, a sense of openness, and a sense of "what can we do better" should inform every minute of every day.

The board must develop a sense of urgency over the programs and education offered by the district. We need board members who are not just ribbon-cutters, who appear smiling at some community event but fail to properly support the program they announce. We need a board that pays attention to details, and gets to decisions by asking questions about how programs and policies are working out in the classroom. We need a board that pays attention to the details, and accepts responsibility for the way policies and programs are developed and carried out.

Responses to questions asked of each candidate are reproduced as submitted to the League.  Candidates' statements are presented as submitted. References to opponents are not permitted.
