As a son of two immigrant parents, Steve has witnessed the challenges of social, economic and political inequalities. Growing up in East Los Angeles and Hunting Park exposed him to the constant misunderstandings associated with shifted perceptions of coming from an immigrant household. Despite the difficulty of these challenges, Steve overcame them, and in doing so it has contributed to his pragmatic, commonsense leadership that we see today.

He took on a leadership role during his undergraduate years at UCLA, while studying History and Latin American Studies. His political involvement on campus led to his participation in local politics. As he broke barriers and continuously made strides, he nurtured his need to work even harder for those who have been exceptionally marginalized.

After becoming an elected board member to the Los Angeles Community College District, Steve was able to balance and appropriately allocate a $3.89 million budget, responsibly prevent it from entering insolvency, and maintain affordable costs for students. During this time he also played a major role in the dialogue in regards to the major renovations all the campuses endured. He helped pioneer the update of classrooms throughout the community college district for millions of students, to grant them access to modern technology and also afford to continue their academic career.

Steve's focus towards minimizing the inequality gap is also exhibited as District Director for State Senator Pro tem Kevin de Leon. While maintaining oversight in the stellar constituent services provided through the District Office, he worked with the State legislature to help the passage of significant pieces of legislation, such as the Film and TV Tax Credit bill (SB 370), restoration and creation of parks (SB 783), and affirmative consent "no means no" bill (SB 967).

His experience working with the State Legislature, Community College Board and fellow elected officials has strengthened his leadership skills to continue working and fighting to increase equality on every level.
