I grew up on farm in Iowa, was an Eagle Scout and altar boy. I was fortunate to receive a four-year scholarship to Yale. It was an exciting and formative college experience. It is the kind of opportunity I will promote for all who have the desire and ability for college and who will work hard to attain an education and a certificate or a degree.

Following graduation from Yale I taught grades 4 and 6 for three years at an elementary school in Newark, New Jersey. This was very satisfying work and I learned a great deal about education, about teaching, about dealing directly with students and parents as well as school administrators.

After working as Executive Director for several not-for-profit agencies I moved to Los Angeles. I first worked for a Councilmember and then was hired as Executive Director of the LA Gay and Lesbian Center.

I was elected twice to the West Hollywood City Council. I was on the founding Coucil in 1984 and served as Mayor.

Following time in politics I went to UCLA PHS to earn an Master's Degree in Public Health. I concentrated on Health Management and Policy. I have a strong policy background.

In 1996 I was hired at Kaiser Permanente where I worked for over seven years. I worked first as a contract manager for outside (non-KP)hospitals and clinics in Riverside and San Bernadino Counties. In 2000 I was promoted to the position of Area Director for Stratigic Planning and Analysis (serving Panorama City, West Valley and Bakersfield.

Since 2004 I have worked in government relations, long-term care and environmental science and safety. I teach environmental science, emergency planning and safety, handling hazardous materials, regulation and transportation. The certificaiton program I work in is the HAZWOPER Program set up by OSHA. Various professionals (drivers, fire personnel, geologists, etc.) enroll in the program and receive a certification for skills acquired in the areas I mention above.
