Questions & Answers

1. What is the single most important issue facing LACCD today? How, as Trustee, would you deal with it?

We have to do a better job of making higher education affordable and accessible. We need to bring more classes online; keep tuition, fees and supplies affordable; strengthen relationships with Unified School Districts, 4-year colleges, business and the public sector; and make sure that students have the resources on campus that they need to succeed.

2. How would you address the level of resources now devoted to remedial classwork at our community colleges?

We must acknowledge the importance of adequately funding K-14 education. In conjunction with funding, there needs to be a stronger articluation between Unified School Districts and our community colleges. Collaboration between these two educational systems is imperative if we want to manage costs and get students through community colleges faster.

3. How would you prioritize the various roles of the community college today?

The first priority of the community college system should be student success. It is important that the LACCD is well-resourced, accessible, and committed to strengthening and expanding career pathways as well as the pipeline into 4-year institutions of higher learning. It is also important that Board members tackle these priorities while providing responsible governance and oversight.
