The Primary Role of Community Colleges

By Mark Isler

Candidate for Member of the Board of Trustees; Los Angeles Community College District; Office 1

Giving People a Second Chance
I believe the primary goal of our community colleges is to give people a second chance. That phrase is what I hear most often from students. A second chance to learn new skills,a second chance for lifelong learning, and a second chance to go to college.

We need to have a discussion about whether everybody needs to go to a four year college. Too many students go to four year institutions and have little to show for it when they graduate, except huge debts. These students would be far better served going to a community college and learning new skills or a trade.

When we redefine the roles of our secondary institutions the community colleges will be better able to focus on what they do best.
