Born and raised in Los Angeles County, Janet Chin has been a Rosemead resident for over 30 years and was elected to the Garvey School Board in 2007 and re-elected in 2011. She has served honorably for 5 years in the United States Army and California National Guard. While serving overseas, she was stationed in Taegu, South Korea with the 19th TAACOM and upon returning, she was stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia with the 63rd Signal Battalion. Shortly after, she was deployed to Port-au-Prince,Haiti during Operation Uphold Democracy. Through global travels with the Army, she became a leading advocate for children. She is the Founder and President of the M. Janet Chin Youth Foundation, a 501(c)3, educational charity which produces youth leaders, develops youth civic engagement and service learning opportunities in the greater Rosemead community.

In the past, Janet has worked in the entertainment industry as an actor, acting coach, casting director and special events producer. She comes from a family with a tradition of military service and hard working business entrepreneurs. She has also worked for the Social Security Administration and is currently the California State Senate District 22 Communications Director. She has been awarded the Los Angeles Bilingual Directors Association Award and honored as a Woman of Distinction by former Congresswoman and now LA County Supervisor, Hilda Solis. Janet is the youngest granddaughter of a founding father of the Fa Yuen Chinese Benevolent Association and part of the lineage of historic roots coming out of the 1920's Chinese Exclusion Act. She continues to advocate for 1st generation immigrants and English Language Learners.

In Janet's first term as an elected school board member, she was elected by her colleagues to serve one year as board clerk, one year as Vice President, and two consecutive years as Board President. She voted to support professional development for teachers and staff, implemented district wide leadership programs, upgraded school facilities, tripled the district's community partnerships, created computer programs for parents, and kept the districts finances in order. The community re-elected Janet to the Garvey School Board in 2011. Janet works tirelessly to bring schools a strong leadership team and is focused on student achievement and preparing students for 21st century skills and careers.

Janet is a recipient of the Young Elected Officials Network Public Service Leadership Award and continues to be a trainer/speaker at national policy conferences. She also serves the public as a Community Advisory Board Member for the US Army Recruiting Battalion of Los Angeles. Janet is a spokesperson on issues relating to Army recruiting and military services and programs. In May 2012, She was elected Vice President of the Los Angeles County School Trustees Association, an county organization of over 91 school boards in Los Angeles County. She is also a member of the CA State Military Reserves.

Janet has served as a Rosemead Traffic Commissioner, a Neighborhood Watch Captain and is a member/ instructor for our Community Emergency Response Team. She has served as Chairperson of the English Language Learners Committee, as Chairperson of the School Advisory Council, as PTA President, and parent member of the Rosemead Rebels and Rosemead Youth Association. Janet has also volunteers on the City of Rosemead Emergency Communications Team as a HAM radio operator.

Janet makes decisions based on her values, respects tradition and our community of many colors. Her root political philosophy of helping those who can't help themselves, giving voice to the voiceless and never giving up on democracy grounds her life's work in what is most important---PUBLIC SERVICE and PUBLIC TRUST.

She lives in Rosemead, California with her husband and 3 sons.
