Education is the Foundation

By Alice Yoder

Candidate for State Representative; Pennsylvania State House of Representatives; District 41

This information is provided by the candidate
Education is the foundation for good health, good jobs and a good economy.
Schools must be held to high standards; we can't afford anything less. They should be given resources to meet those standards, and the obligation to present data to demonstrate the results. Every child, regardless of where they live, should receive the same high level of education. We must not write off entire neighborhoods or social/economic groups. We must assure opportunities for children from poor families to rise to middle class or higher.

The systems that are known to have the best impact for all children are focused on early childhood education. The years before a child reaches kindergarten are among the most critical in his or her life to influence learning. I will advocate for early childhood education, enhancing resources for schools to successfully meet or exceed standards for all children. I'll support innovation in education to transform teaching and job skills readiness, to supply our local employers with workers that exceed expectations. Our goal should be that all children graduate from high school, go on to technical training or college and qualify for a job that provides a livable wage.

I propose to pay for support of education by imposing a severance tax on natural gas. Pennsylvania is failing to collect such a tax now, which I consider inexcusable.
