Getting our economy working again

Given Pennsylvania's natural resources and its abundance of world-class public and private universities, Pennsylvania should be a front runner in job creation and innovation. Sadly, under the current administration, Pennsylvania has been falling behind the rest of America. This administration has stifled entrepreneurs and start-up companies that create good jobs and grow the economy for all. That's why we've plummeted from 7th in the nation all the way down to 38th in state entrepreneurship rankings. Overall, Pennsylvania now ranks 47th in the nation in job growth. That's not a winning formula for any of us, and it is one more reason we need to change Harrisburg.

Whether it was as a volunteer in West Africa or as a venture capitalist right here at home, Chuck has dedicated his life to investing in entrepreneurs so they can turn ideas into breakthrough technologies. Chuck spent 30 years helping small businesses turn innovative ideas into successful companies that created thousands of jobs. Working together, he helped develop medical devices that more quickly and accurately diagnose cancer and are used in nearly every operating room in America.

That experience taught Chuck that what small businesses need isn't government picking winners and losers, investing in favored companies and denying support to those not lucky enough to get on elected officials' good sides. What small businesses need is for government to create an environment in which they can flourish and succeed, to create smart and effective regulations and rules that protect the public interest without hamstringing business, and create small, targeted incentives that help businesses grow and catalyze our full economic potential in the process. Our existing infrastructure is grossly inadequate to the needs of our region. Last year Pennsylvania stuck an inadequate band aid on the problem, passing a transportation bill that didn't even fund all of our outstanding maintenance and repairs + much less make investments in expanded capacity. There's so much more we can and should be doing in this area, and refusing to make smart investments now only increases the bills we'll have to pay later. The devastating education cuts authored by my opponent + that he now pretends never happened + are penny-wise and pound-foolish, and hurt future economic growth.
