John is a fourth generation Santa Rosan. One of his Great Grandfathers immigrated here in the late 1890's and planted a vineyard in Santa Rosa's Bennett Valley where the original farm house stands today.

John's retail future began at the age of twelve. At 21, he took over management of Sawyer's News in downtown Santa Rosa. The business was started by his Great Grandfather Sawyer in 1936. John later became owner/operator of the business and continued in that capacity for the next 35 years.

The Santa Rosa Downtown Development Association Board provided his first volunteer community service experience leading 25 years later to his election to the Santa Rosa City Council in 2004.

John served two terms in office including appointments as Mayor and Vice Mayor.
