Productive Citizens

By Eric Kirchmann

Candidate for Board Member; West Sonoma County Union High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Schools are meant to create productive Citizens. Thomas Mann wanted citizens to be able to be informed voters and thought our schools should prepare citizens for this task.
We all live in our communities and rightfully feel our schools are a large part of our community. They are! To state the obvious truth: Schools are not the only place people learn. High School is where our citizens need to hone their skills for lifelong learning. It is where they should get some ideas of planning to learn and earn; and enter the rest of their lives. Where students learn to be productive citizens adding to their communities on all levels. Discounting that they are still teenagers and should not need to face their future is not preparing them for the journey they are embarking upon.

High School graduates need plans not simply for the next few years but for five or more years so they can embark with destinations and goals they can focus on and achieve. They should not clutch their Diploma in hand and just wait and see what happens next. They should leave high school with a plan, with goals, with direction for their next years and in fact the rest of their lives. Our community depends upon productive citizens, our future depends upon it. Our students, our children, our future certainly better focus on this as our primary goal. How and Why? How and why is as important as who, when, where, and what? This is the essence of the Common Core movement and transcends it. Our students deserve to graduate knowing where they are headed, how to get there; and why they should go.
