Some Additonal Information

By Bill Carle

Candidate for Board Member; City of Santa Rosa High School District

This information is provided by the candidate
This is a handout piece I have provided to voters.
I have been on the Board for 16 years. I have routinely taken leadership positions over the years, as President 5 years, Vice-President and Clerk, 3 years each, as well as numerous Committee Chairs. When I see issues that need attention, I bring proposals to the Board for resolution. My sole compass is what is best for students....period. Both my boys went through Santa Rosa City Schools and graduated from Santa Rosa High School. Both received a great education and went on to have successful college careers with post degree graduate schools, one having graduated and one still doing grad school. The Santa Rosa public school system provided a great education for them. I want to be sure we continue to do so, improving where we need to and assuring that all kids have a chance to realize their post high school dreams, whether that is college, career or something else. My mother taught at Lincoln elementary school in our district. My brother is a proud alum of Piner High School, and is an elementary teacher today. The public school system is in our blood. I received an all California public school education all the way through law school. The problem today is the gap between what that cost me, with the promise last century of an affordable public education in this state, and what it will cost today's high school students, has widened dramatically. And while we cannot impact that locally, it hurts our students and needs to be something we work on at the state level.

I have been President of the Board the last two years. I am proud of what we have accomplished. We have a new strategic plan to chart our work, something several of us have wanting for a few years. We have retained small class sizes, especially K-3. We have dramatically increased staff and community input. We have forged deeper relationships with SRJC and Sonoma State, to the benefit of many many students. We have implemented a better system to deal with suspensions and expulsions, keeping more students in school and learning. We continue to be a leader in the state with career technical programs and we continue to work hard to retain arts, music and sports (and in that regard, thank goodness we have Schools Plus which I have supported for many years and am proud to say I have the endorsement of Mr. Schools Plus himself, John Bribiescas, 35 year teacher and English Department Chair at Santa Rosa High for 11 years) I am committed to continuing that work for another four years.

I am proud to have the endorsement of the Press Democrat. Here is what they said, after extensive interviews:

"Carle, 59, in particular, has been a stalwart member of the board, serving most recently as board president, working closely with Superintendent Socorro Shiels in formulating a new strategic plan, adjusting to the governor's new funding formula for schools and building partnerships in the community to remove non-academic obstacles to student achievement.

Carle, an attorney who has served on the board since 1998, is a true student of the challenges facing education and is a proven advocate for helping the school board keep its focus where it belongs -- on helping students succeed." (Press Democrat October 3, 2014)

I also am very proud of having raised the need for concussion baseline testing and management for all student athletes. I proposed these three years ago and we now have in place the start of a robust program to protect our students. Here is the letter to the editor published last Sunday October 5, 2014, in that regard:

"EDITOR: Bill Carle, the president of the Santa Rosa Board of Education, cares about the health and well-being of all students, not only today but into their futures as well. As a result, three years ago he began calling for improved concussion management for student athletes.

The North Coast concussion management project was created by a dedicated group of local sports medicine physicians. Our goal is to provide a framework of medical concussion management for children in our community, regardless of insurance type or status, to ensure the diagnosis and treatment of concussion injuries. Carle has consistently been a strong advocate of the program and worked with us to do the right thing for kids.

We've made great strides, but there is still much work to be done. We need to provide athletic trainers for each school, and we must continue our efforts to educate administrators, coaches, parents and especially kids. Carle's leadership is a critical piece of ensuring that these efforts continue. Please vote to re-elect him on Nov. 4." DR. TODD WEITZENBERG , Chief of Sports Medicine Kaiser Permanente, Santa Rosa

Education challenges are ever changing....but the goals remain constant....preparing our children for college and the working world......promoting policies for student success on all levels.....building community partnerships based on cooperation and respect......creating an understanding that in life there is accountability.....and teaching students, school is for life.

Lastly, I also am proud to have the endorsement of Board members who are not up for election this year, Vice-President Donna Jeye, Jen Klose and Larry Haenel. I will always work for the benefit of students and I will always be available to anyone who wants to talk about how we can make our school system better. If you have any specific questions, please call or email me. My office number is 526-4200 and my email is bcarle@cmprlaw.com. If you email me a contact number, I can call you in the evening, as well. I want to earn your vote. Thank you.
