Candidate Statement

By Douglas Henning Radtke

Candidate for Board Member; Peninsula Health Care District

This information is provided by the candidate
Peninsula Healthcare District should recognize the findings and adhere to adopt the Grand Jury recommendations given to them.
As a candidate for the Peninsula Health Care District I support and agree with the findings and recommendations of the San Mateo Grand Jury in 2013.

The Grand Jury recommended the district reevaluate its role as either a landlord, real estate developer, or health care leader. After World War II, the State Legislature allowed communities to create these Districts to serve rural areas without access to basic hospital care.

Today, the district is sitting en $61 million in reserves and the district is one of thirty such health care districts statewide that no longer run hospitals. Meanwhile, there are thousands of uninsured residents in San Mateo County within the district with urgent healthcare needs. The District is currently engaging in unnecessary real estate development activities to the benefit of special interest groups and not the healthcare needs of the county.

Furthermore, the district is acting as a taxpayer funded "United Way" giving away millions of dollars in grants to non-profits without taxpayer/voter consent.

I have extensive experience performing assurance audits on governmental entities, including cities and special districts. As a director, I will advocate for accountability, transparency, and good-governance in the district.

Together we can open the discussion about the role of the district moving forward: I ask for your support and your vote.
