Smart Voter Full Biography for Ken Wagman

Candidate for
Board Member; Santa Cruz City High School District; Area 1

This information is provided by the candidate

I attended UC Santa Cruz and have raised my family here, including two children who thrived in Santa Cruz City Schools. I have been involved in the public schools since becoming active in PTA when my older child entered elementary school. I chaired the Westlake Arts Committee and ran the Arts Fair for five years. When my kids were in middle school, I co-chaired the PTA before running for school board. Since I've been on the board, I've volunteered or run the parcel tax campaigns which keep arts, music, librarians, counselors, and highly qualified teachers in our schools.

Professionally, I got my start as a math lecturer at UC Santa Cruz. After that, I joined the full-time faculty at Gavilan Community College where I've been teaching math for 25 years. I recently served as president of the Gavilan teachers' union and led the drive to triple the size of the union by adding all part-timers as members, giving them full representation for the first time.

Additionally, I was the president of the Neighborhood Food Co-op, I regularly serve food at the homeless shelter, annually set up the course for the Human Race, and participate in other community organizations.
