James Brian Vlahos For School Board 2014

By James "Brian" Vlahos

Candidate for Board Member; Roseville City School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Dear Friends,

In 2010, I was fortunate enough to have been elected, by you, as a Trustee to the Roseville City School Board. It has been an absolute honor to serve you, your children and our community in this capacity. I have made the decision to once again run for this position and I would be honored to have your vote and support.

For those of you who don't know me, I am a third generation Roseville Citizen. I received my education in the Roseville City School and Roseville High School Districts, graduating from Roseville High School in 1984. As well, my children attended, and have since graduated in the Roseville public school systems. The education we have all been provided has served us well and it is my desire to continue to provide our children with the best public education possible.

When I ran for my first term the economy was at rock bottom and the fiscal crisis was hitting our schools hard. I ran for the position of Trustee with a genuine intent to help manage the crisis and give something back to my community. By doing so, in the last 4 years I have had to make several tough choices. The guiding principle behind any of my decisions is based on the following two questions:

  • How does this benefit the student?
  • How can we providing our children with the best public education possible?

By adhering to such principles, I have recently been appointed Board President and a Delegate to CSBA (California School Board Association). We have also:
  • Hired a new Superintendent.
  • Hired a new Director of Education. *Hired a new Director of Finances.
  • Hired a new Director of Facilities and Maintenance.
  • Balanced Budget no major layoffs/added staff.
  • While implementing the new Common Core Statutes, student test scores have continued to hold without major changes.
  • Opened Chilton and Fiddyement Farms
  • Continue to operate the safest and cleanest Facilities in the Region.
  • Started an IB Program (International Baccalaureate)at Eich Middle School
  • Refinanced our Bond at a savings of over $1,000,000.00 to Tax payers

However, the work is a long way from being over. Currently our schools are facing some tough issues, these include;

  • The completion of Common Core implementation.
  • New State requirement
  • Population expansion in the West side and contraction on the East side of Town.
  • Technologies ever-changing circumstance. Along with new State requirements.
  • Staff retirements key positions.
  • Facilities, i.e. new and preventive maintenance.

In summation, I would like to bring to your attention three additional reasons as to why you should cast your vote for Me.

1.Cohesiveness: Now is not the time to change a School Board that works and interacts well together. The current team/School Board has demonstrated its ability to tackle the hard problems and administer positive solutions.

2.Experience: It takes time to understand the in's and out's of in California Education system. School Budgets, Education Services and Human Resources are not simplistic institutions. Experience is the key to navigating such channels successfully. Note: I filled an vacant seat.

3.High Standards: The Citizens of the Roseville Community demand and expect the high standards that the RCSD has established for its self. That reputation is one of the main reasons Business's and Families want to locate here. Keeping that reputation strong brings opportunity and prosperity to this region.

As previously stated, it will take courage, experience and a real sense of community to stay the course and make the absolute right decisions for our Children and Community. I have these qualities along with strong commitment to service.

I would be honored to have your vote and support in 2014 to be re-elected as a Roseville City School Board Trustee.

With gratitude,

James Brian Vlahos
