Role Of Government: Why I Am Running For Re-Election

By Fred M. Whitaker

Candidate for Council Member; City of Orange

This information is provided by the candidate
As a Constitutional Conservative, I believe in the limited form of government envisioned by the Founders. The government that governs least governs best and the government that governs best is that which is closest to the people. That is why I've been honored to serve on your City Council these last four years and act as your Mayor Pro Tem this year.
It is at the City Council level where decisions of government most directly affect people. It's at the City Council where we have to solve problems with the limited resources we have. We don't have the ability to print or borrow money like the Federal Government or Sacramento. At the City Council level my belief in limited government keeps me focused on the things we should be doing and helps me guide the City away from trying to be a panacea for every problem. Limited Government means we only focus on the things that people cannot effectively do individually or in groups. That means we focus on Public Safety, Infrastructure, Parks/Libraries, all while doing so in a fiscally responsible manner. George Washington said that "Government is not reason, it is not eloquent, it is force. Like fire, it is a dangerous servant and a fearful master." You the people + are the masters, and my job is to help ensure that government in Orange remains your servant.

Orange has a deep history of respecting tradition and the individual. We are a tight community that takes care of each other, yet doesn't do it through government action. We are a stable community in terms of expected behavior, yet one that embraces those that are different. Orange is nothing short of amazing. I believe my philosophy and understanding of the community are what encouraged you to elect me to office in 2010. This basic philosophy and understanding are allowing us to fulfill the promises made four years ago. I would be honored to serve another four years on our City Council to complete the work you sent me to do.
