Campaign Statement

By Charlene Metoyer

Candidate for Trustee; Newport-Mesa Unified School District; Trustee Area 2

This information is provided by the candidate
I have a rich, varied background working with the Newport-Mesa Unified School District which will add knowledge and experience to the board.
Many of you know me as the recently retired principal of Eastbluff and Harbor View Elementary Schools. I am also a homeowner, parent (our four children attended Newport-Mesa Schools), and longtime local teacher. I know our community, students, teachers, and the challenges facing our school district.

I have been active in the Parent Faculty Organization and PTA, serving both as President. Additionally, I served on the Newport-Mesa Citizens Oversight Committee + Measure A, American Cancer Society as NMUSD Daffodil Day Chairperson, and as Costa Mesa Child Care and Youth Services Committee Chairperson.

I know it takes dedication to help students master the skills needed to be successful in a rapidly changing world. I also understand how difficult it is to balance the needs of students, parents, and teachers, while keeping the budget, facilities, and District goals in check. My experience and skills will well serve our community and students as your Trustee for the Newport- Mesa Unified School District Board of Education. As a principal, I was awarded Orange County Special Education "Friend" award and helped two schools earn California Distinguished School recognition. Both schools were awarded Orange County Register's Gold Medal School. I was named NMUSD Principal of the Year and the Association of California School Administrators Orange County Elementary Principal of the Year.

Our District must rigorously challenge students to succeed in college or career. We must ensure our teachers provide the highest quality instruction. I will continue to demand high expectations for student behavior, while creating a climate where students are safe and personally accountable for their actions.

I oppose the expansion of any school district facility without input from the residents of the community. I will work closely with the neighborhood leaders and City Council Members to solve school traffic and bike safety issues before they become problems, not after the fact.

Based on my background and record of achievement I have been endorsed by many community and educational leaders including: Marian Bergeson, Dr. Steven Beazley, Dave Brooks, Keith Curry, Rush Hill, Katrina Foley, Gary Monahan, Mary Hornbuckle, John Stephens, Newport-Mesa Federation of Teachers, NMFT Retired, Scott and Liddy Paulsen, Linda Sneen, Jim and Mary Ferryman, Mary Manos, Barbara Harrington, and Bonnie Swann.

Serving the community through education has been my mission since I graduated from college. I ask for your vote in the November 4th election.
