EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION

My goal as a board member is to improve the educational opportunities for all students in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD). Our schools must be safe environments replete with qualified teachers and administrators, up-to-date instructional materials, modern facilities, and educational programs that provide each and every student equal opportunities to acquire a strong academic foundation. Course offerings must be rigorous and relevant regardless of whether a student plans to pursue higher education or specialize training or plans to enter the workplace immediately following graduation.

RESPONSIBLE FISCAL LEADERSHIP

State funding for education has been very tumultuous during the past decade. Currently the state funding formula is undergoing a significant change. We need to do our best to protect our ability to deliver a quality education to students while maintaining fiscal solvency. Therefore, well-informed decisions are more critical than ever. As an educational leader in this district, I have a strong record of making decisions which have resulted in fiscal stability.

During my time in office, the district was able to successfully come through not only the challenges imposed by the historic Orange County bankruptcy but also a series of cuts by the State stretched out over the past 10+ years. Through responsible budgeting, alternate funding sources, and belt-tightening actions, we have remained solvent. The citizens of the district played a key role in supporting school bond measures Y and A. These provided important financial assistance which has enabled the district to modernize older schools, build four new campuses, two new gymnasiums, a new stadium, and a new Performing Arts Center for the district.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District encompasses all of the cities of Placentia and Yorba Linda as well as portions of Anaheim, Brea, and Fullerton. In this diverse district, it is important to stay connected to the needs of each of these areas. As a board member, it is vital for us to be the bridge between these communities and the school district.

Additionally, we must act as a representative of PYLUSD at the local level as well as at the county and the state level. I have been and will continue to be active at all levels by continuing my involvement in local civic organizations, county educational associations and committees, and as a delegate member to the California School Boards Association Delegate Assembly. I understand my role as a board member, take my responsibilities seriously, and do my best to be well-informed.

LEADERSHIP STYLE

Information and communication are essential in being effective as a board member. I am willing to listen and remain open to new ideas. I'm approachable and believe in open communications with all stakeholders. I come prepared for all meetings and do my "homework". I am visible in the schools and in our community. I seek positive solutions utilizing consensus building and collaboration built on trust and respect for fellow board members, district staff, and community members. We must work together in order to be effective and accomplish the district mission.

PYLUSD Mission:

"We hold high expectations for all students through rigorous and relevant educational experiences that challenge them to become responsible, ethical, and engaged citizens."

Representing all of our students no matter who they are or where they live or attend school is my fundamental responsibility. I am enthusiastic about my role as a board member because I am convinced that our future depends on educating today's students and those of tomorrow in order to keep our nation thriving and moving ahead.
