WHAT WHAT MAKES THE MPRPD UNIQUE?

By John Dalessio

Candidate for Board Member; Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District; Ward 5

This information is provided by the candidate
The MPRPD is an open space district. As such, we have no liability for our open spaces, as long as we leave them in their natural condition.
The Monterey County Park District has 63 employees. It charges entry fees, and limit the hours when the parks are open. The MPRPD has only 13 employees. MPRPD parks are free, and open dawn to dusk 365 days per year.

How do we do it? We are an Open Space District, one of six in California. We can invite the public on to our land that remains in its natural condition, and we are not liable if anyone is injured while enjoying this land.

That's the deal. The public gets large open tracts of land, the critters get habitat, the flora get space to thrive, and we can keep it all together with a fraction of the staff (and money) that a fully staffed recreational park would cost.

Occasionally (like now), we are pressured to change our operations to a more park and rec style, or to share our resources with organizations which do not enjoy our freedom from liability. We cannot do either and still keep our parks free and open everyday from dawn to dust.

I want to keep Garland and Palo Corona as they are, open and free. It's why I'm running again for this office.
