Marina Should Focus on Downtown Redevelopment

By David W. Brown

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Marina

This information is provided by the candidate
City management had, in previous years, concentrated too much on commercial development along the Imjin Road/Parkway corridor, and some want to narrow Reservation Road to two lanes, so as to re-route even more traffic through Imjin. I oppose this, as bad for our business and residential communities. I favor downtown redevelopment taking precedence over Imjin corridor development. That being said, I am proud to have been part of a 3:2 majority that finally brought Marina a Cinemark movie theatre, with construction having started in September of this year, at the Dunes Shopping Center, and a coming Mariott Springhill hotel, just south of the Peninsula Wellness Center.

One way our city can start revitalizing downtown is to make it more available and attractive to the CSUMB university community as a place to shop and dine. California Avenie south of Imjin Parkway needs a direct connection to General Jim Moore Blvd, so that CSUMB students in the dormitories along General Jim Moore Blvd. can access downtown without driving through the current zig-zagging pothole-ridden route, with obstacles created, unfortunately, by CSUMB. That was to happen with development of Marina Heights, but was stalled due to that development having been put on hold. We need to find a way to fund that connection, to make it easier for CSUMB students, faculty and staff to access our downtown. We also need to explore a connection -- in addition to Reservation Road -- between Central Marina and the CSUMB East Campus Housing area, for much the same reason.
