By Andrew Walzer

Candidate for Member, Board of Trustees; Santa Monica Community College District

This information is provided by the candidate
As a member of the SMC Board of Trustees for the past eight years, I am proud of my accomplishments. Under my leadership, Santa Monica College has maintained its standing as the #1 transfer college to the UC's and is #1 in transfers of Black and Latino students to the UC's. We support our local economy with our Small Business Center, offering counseling to more than 750 clients annually. We offer more than 70 degrees or certificates in Career Technical Education. We provide all of our students, staff and faculty with free bus passes to encourage them to use of public transportation and reduce traffic. We provide our local students special opportunities to bridge the gap between high school and college. We made it through the Great Recession with no layoffs, furloughs, or salary reductions for full time employees. We fully fund our employee medical, dental and vision benefits. We are building a campus in Malibu to better serve our Malibu students. As a community college professor at Los Angeles City College, a former student success coordinator, and "Teacher of the Year," I fully understand the obstacles that students face in completing their degrees and transferring to four year colleges. As a Santa Monica College Board Member, I have worked hard to improve our success and completion rates and to maintain our standing as the top transfer institution in the state. And As a father with children in our public schools, I understand how important it is that our children have the opportunity to attend college.
