I know this District

By Ayana Kirkland Young

Candidate for Board Member; West Contra Costa Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
I met my husband when we were in elementary school, in this district. Now my husband and I are raising our children in the same area we grew up. When you live in an area for nearly your entire life, it becomes apart of who you are. That's why making this district the best it can be is so important to me. I know what our district needs because I've been here. I know the people, I know how we once were, and because of that I know what we can become. I'm an advocate both by nature and profession, I'm still in the classroom so I know what both the students and the teachers need.

What's so important about knowing the district is the fact that it's going to take more than 5 members on the board to effect change and progression. While everything isn't perfect in our district there are some programs and people who are doing a wonderful job and simply need the support of the board in order to really be effective. We need involvement of parents and community groups to improve this district. I have those connections simply because I have been here so long and have been involved.

I have been attending the Bond Oversight Committee Trainings in an effort educate myself on how the Bond Program works. The information I have been receiving from these training coupled with my legal and research skills allows me to be an effective board member. Add all that to being actively involved in this community, makes for a perfect match for a school board candidate.
