I have lived in West County for over 60 years primarily in North Richmond and San Pablo. I am a product of the West Contra Costa Unified School District. I graduated from Richmond High School. I attended Contra Costa College as a student-athlete and earned an athletic scholarship in football to California State University, Fresno. I have taught an introduction to U.S. government course at Contra Costa College since 2009. I was elected to the San Pablo city council in 1988 and served as the first African-American mayor in 1992. I was elected to the San Pablo city council again in 2004 and served until 2012. As a council member, I was appointed to several entities in the public sector: the West Contra Costa Integrated Waste Management Authority (Vice-Chair), the East Bay Regional Communications Systems Authority, the Contra Costa Community College District Bond Oversight Committee, the the Association of Bay Area Government (ABAG)and the League of California Cities Transportation, Communications and Public Works Policy Committee and Community Services Policy Committee.

The San Pablo city council appointed to the San Pablo Economic Development Corporation, the San Pablo Measure Q Citizens Oversight Committee and the Contra Costa County Library commission. I have more than 30 years of experience in the nonprofit sector and possess a certificate in nonprofit consulting.

I earned a Masters in Political Science from San Francisco State University. I earned a BA degree in Government from California State University, Sacramento. I earned a Vocational Education Credential from UC Berkeley. I am a published author in the anthology, The Cold War Against Labor. I am a retired member of Iron workers Local Union #378. I currently am a member of United Faculty within the Contra Costa Community College District.

I have a daughter and a son and three grandchildren.
