Safer Streets

By Reanette Fillmer

Candidate for Council Member; City of Chico

This information is provided by the candidate
I firmly believe that the primary responsibility of our local government is to provide for the safety of our residents. If a city fails to provide adequate public safety services, crime will increase, the local economy will suffer, and the overall quality of life for residents diminishes. Unfortunately, this is what we are now experiencing in Chico.

Although our population has grown by 23,000 residents in the past 12 years, we have the same number of police officers patrolling our streets. This is unacceptable.

On the council, I will fight for budgets that allocate funds for more police officers, aggressively seek public safety grants, and develop strategic partnerships with Chico Unified School District, Chico State and other organizations that benefit from the city's public safety services. It's frustrating that time and again concerned citizens have needed to pack the council chambers in order to convince some members of the council that public safety should be a priority. We need new leadership on the council that will be firm in their commitment to providing adequate public safety services.
