Key Issues

By Charles R. Williams

Candidate for Mayor; City of Oakland

This information is provided by the candidate
I would like to bring simple structure back to our beloved city of Oakland. I would like to research every complaint line by line and word by word on all reports and investigations concerning Oakland Police Department has been beat, demoralized, and at times thrown as if they were a piece of junk.  The morale and day to day pressure is horrible. In addition, our officer are putting their lives on the line by out-gunned and out-equipped by the street gangs and criminals. Everyone and his brother has sued the city behind the Oakland City Police Department and the crime is almost beyond daily control.   The community has to realize that paying for crime on a daily basis is very expensive with Oakland growing so fast, the price of prevention is about half of that.  In essence, the community is paying long term prison stays and sentences. Rather than just paying for 200 policemen and  approximately 150-200 patrol observances, from the long term unemployed in the professional ranks.

As far as the violence in East Oakland City Schools, I hope that all of the school system would put all of the students into uniforms and set a dress and grooming code.  This would set a standard allowing parents to at least relax financially and invest more towards their education and give them little more to live on. This would also cut down on the showing of gang colors that are so prevalent throughout the school system.

Also in address our youth, they should more activities to occupy their time such as professional developments (i.e. Junior Achievement and MESA) and occupational skills center, as well safe but fun activities offered through Leisure Services, Parks & Recreation, and our church groups.

I also like to develop a tracking and community support system for the homeless.
