Career and Technical Education

By Janice Friesen

Candidate for Board Member; Castro Valley Unified School District

This information is provided by the candidate
C/T Education is an increasingly important choice for students, as an introduction to careers or an alternative to college.
Castro Valley High School does very well with college prep and many of our students go on immediately to 4 year colleges and universities. We are very involved as partners with the Regional Occupational Program and the excellent career and technical programs they offer. But we can and must do more. In the past 3 months I have had the following experiences: hired someone to find a leak in my water system; hired a mechanic to test and identify the problem in the big battery in my Prius; had first hand contact with x-rays, casting, lab technicians, etc in a large medical setting-- none of these career jobs can ever be outsourced and I know we can all think of many more. We need to expand in Career and Technical education with the ROP, on our own high school campus and in our adult school offerings in, for instance, the health field so our students who have never considered pre-med or higher level math and science, can know of other routes to good careers. Or in careers with children, which offer students the opportunity to try out classroom experiences where they are teacher aides, so see if teaching is a career they might pursue. Both of these examples might lead to part time jobs while attending college, or to careers in and of themselves.
