The first son of immigrant parents, David Chiu grew up in Boston and received his undergraduate, law and master's in public policy degrees from Harvard. In the mid-1990s, David served as Democratic Counsel to the U.S. Senate Constitution Subcommittee and Senator Paul Simon's aide to the U.S. Senate Budget Committee.

17 years ago, David moved to San Francisco, where he served as a criminal prosecutor at the San Francisco District Attorney's Office and as a civil rights attorney with the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights. In 1999, David became a founder of the public affairs technology company Grassroots Enterprise, where he served as Chief Operating Officer until 2008.

For a dozen years before he ran for office, David was a hands-on leader in San Francisco. He served as a Small Business Commissioner, president of the Greater Bay Area Asian American Bar Association, board member of Partners Enduring Domestic Abuse as well as chaired the boards of the Youth Leadership Institute, the Chinatown Community Development Center and Lower Polk Neighbors. David has been elected three times to the San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee, and chaired the 13th Assembly District Democratic Committee (before the 13th AD became the 17th AD).

In 2008, out of a competitive field of 9 candidates, David was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, representing the city's world-famous northeast neighborhoods and tourism, retail and downtown financial districts. District 3 is home to North Beach, Chinatown, Telegraph Hill, Russian Hill, Polk Street, Nob Hill, Union Square, Financial District, Barbary Coast and Fisherman's Wharf.

On his first day in office, David was elected President of the Board of Supervisors, the first Asian American to hold the post. Over the past 5 years, David has been an effective consensus maker who has delivered results for many of San Francisco's toughest challenges. David's reputation as a problem solver led his fellow supervisors to select him as Board President for an unprecedented three terms. In 2012, David was overwhelmingly re-elected by the voters of District 3 to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors.

David has passed more legislation than anyone currently on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors; to learn more about his track record, please visit VoteDavidChiu.com/issues. For his legislative work, David has received recognitions from the San Francisco Women's Political Committee, Alice B. Toklas LGBT Democratic Club, Raoul Wallenberg Jewish Democratic Club, Housing Action Coalition and numerous other organizations. He has been named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum, an American Memorial Marshall Fellow, and one of the "Best Attorneys under 40" by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association.
