Ami Bera was elected to represent Sacramento County in November 2012. A first generation American, Ami was born and raised in California and benefited from California's public schools, from kindergarten through medical school. He has always believed in hard work and community service--and refuses to accept a future where our children and grandchildren don't have the kind of opportunities that he did.

After medical school, Ami put his degree to work for us, practicing medicine in several roles in the Sacramento region and eventually serving Sacramento County as Chief Medical Officer. He used his skills as a tough negotiator to fight to reduce the cost of health care, create jobs, and deliver care to tens of thousands of Sacramento residents.

Ami went on to become a Clinical Professor of Medicine and Associate Dean for Admissions and Outreach at UC Davis, where he taught the next generation of doctors to care for patients. He helped the student-run clinics find innovative ways to engage with the community and deliver care to those who needed it the most.

A new kind of leader who puts the public good over personal gain, Ami is committed to making the world a better place for our children and grandchildren. That means addressing the deficit so that we don't pass on a mountain of debt, and working hard to build an economy that works for the middle class.

He believes Congress is a place for service. Like the oath he took to put his patients first when he became a doctor, Ami is keeping his oath to Sacramento County to put the people first as he represents them in Congress. He has:

  • Sponsored and helped lead the passage of No Budget, No Pay--a law that says if Congress doesn't do their job and pass a responsible budget, they don't get paid.

  • Opposed Congressional pay raises several times. And he'll continue to oppose them until unemployment is below 5 percent in Sacramento County.

  • Refused a Congressional pension until Medicare and Social Security are secure for all Americans.

  • Become a co-chair of the No Labels' Problem Solvers, a group of more than 70 Members of Congress from both parties who are working together to find solutions to our problems and get past partisan gridlock.

Ami and his wife Janine live in Elk Grove with their daughter, Sydra.
