It's Time For Fresh Ideas

By Anila Ali

Candidate for Member of the State Assembly; District 74

Why I am the Best Choice for the 74th Assembly District.
At the recent candidate forum for the 74th Assembly District, a question was raised about choosing the most experienced candidate. The assumption seems to be that just being a politician enhances the profile of a candidate. I disagree. In fact my decision to run was based on my belief that what Sacramento needs more than another career politician is people with fresh ideas, respect for our Democratic system of government, an appreciation for the challenges residents and local communities face and a willingness to work across party lines to get things done. The 74th Assembly District has incredible assets. As a professional educator I appreciate the academic profile of the district, which includes award-winning K-12 districts, three Community College districts and the University of California, Irvine. I understand that education is the gateway to prosperity for the next generation. Businesses need a quality workforce. Simply put, we can't build our economy without investing in high quality public education. As an immigrant from Pakistan who earned my Masters in Education and teaching credential here in America, I am part of the growing multicultural profile of the 74th Assembly District. Representing a district with such a broad spectrum of cultures and faiths excites me. The future of Orange County is being shaped by global thinkers who are driving innovation at the local, national and international level. We don't need more "politicians," we need creative problem solvers in Sacramento to keep California on the cutting edge. While political debates are designed to point out philosophic divides among candidates, my campaign is focused on our common aspirations. Everyone in the 74th Assembly District wants economic opportunity and a good quality of life. We all deserve equal protection under the law and equal access at all levels of society. We want our public infrastructure to be sound and for our tax dollars to be brought back to our local communities. And we want our children and families to thrive in a healthy and well protected environment. If voters in the 74th Assembly District, which includes (list cities) want the same old brand of politics, I'm not their candidate. If they want their representatives to care more about the next office they're going to run for than the people they were elected to represent, they'll have to look to my opponents. The truth is, I'm not the typical Orange County "cookie-cutter" candidate. From my work in social justice and human rights to my efforts to fight bullying and support counter-terrorism efforts, I understand what it means to stand up for what's right and be an advocate for the people. Orange County is an amazing place and the 74th Assembly District includes some of our most impressive cities. Public service is not a "job," it is a calling. We've never needed fresh ideas and a spirit of optimism more than we do today. I look forward to taking my experience as a teacher, a parent, a citizen advocate, an author and a bridge-builder to Sacramento.
