Stockton City Councilmember Dyane Burgos Medina has been on the frontline of many of our city's challenges. As a social worker, she has worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life for our children and families. Appointed to the City Council in early 2013, Burgos Medina has wasted no time making her presence felt and has shown courage while making the tough decisions that are now leading our city through bankruptcy.

Dyane's father, Alejandro, immigrated to the United States from a war-torn El Salvador and met and married her mother, Tammy, before he joined the United States Army. After her parents separated Dyane moved to Stockton with her mother as Tammy searched for opportunities to work and further her education while raising two children.

Growing up, Tammy and Dyane endured many struggles and sacrifices as a single-parent family striving to make it. Yet Dyane cites her mother's strength through this adversity as one of her biggest inspirations. During high school, Dyane became involved in the Students in Prevention program, and through that work she was introduced to numerous at-risk children and the challenges they faced. Reflecting on her own upbringing and her mother's courage, Dyane was determined to help children and families receive the tools and resources they needed to succeed.

After graduating from Bear Creek High School in north Stockton, Burgos Medina graduated from the University of California, San Diego where she majored in Human Development. She obtained her Master degree in Social Work from California State University, Stanislaus and began working with neglected and abused children. Dyane continued her education in the legal field to become a true advocate for the people she wanted to help. She applied and was immediately accepted to the Laurence Drivon School of Law where she graduated in May 2013.

Dyane aspired to serve because she knew her life experience, social work training, and her legal perspective would be an asset during these very challenging times. Since being appointed to the City Council, she continues to help the children of her community in her job as a social worker for Child Protective Services. She serves the community at large by partnering with citizens and organizations for the betterment of Stockton. She serves on eight council committees and sits as the Vice Chair of the California State University Stockton Center Site Authority, the Community Improvement and Crime Prevention Committee, and the Legislation/Environmental Committee.

While on the Council, Dyane will continue to fight for those without a voice and continue to be a fair and compassionate advocate for the people.
