Progressive Approach to Public Safety Policies and Priorities

By James Hellmold

Candidate for Sheriff; County of Los Angeles

This information is provided by the candidate
Making our communities safer and sustaining long-term success by establishing public safety priorities.
The time has come for a more progressive approach to public safety policies and implementing real reforms to the entire justice system. This process starts with establishing local law enforcement priorities focused on making our communities safer and sustaining long-term success. This progressive approach has been resisted by the traditional law enforcement establishment for decades, by using fear, scare tactics, and "tough on crime" rhetoric. With my 25-year proven record of crime-fighting and problem solving, I will continue to implement effective public safety strategies which have already resulted in reducing crime to the lowest levels in more than 40 years. Los Angeles County needs a Sheriff with the respect and credibility within law enforcement, and the innovation and energy to advance effective strategies such as:

  • Focusing enforcement efforts on violent offenders as opposed to over reaching for minor offenses

  • Directing mentally ill offenders away from jails and into proper facilities

  • Finding alternatives to incarceration for low level offenders centered on facilitating long- term success and growth

  • Incentives for inmates to participate in Education Based Incarceration to develop life skills, anger management, and substance abuse education to reduce recidivism

  • Strengthening efforts to keep guns away from children and criminals

  • Ensuring deputies receive pertinent tactical and professional training, strengthening emergency preparedness and school safety
