Candidate for
Sheriff; County of Los Angeles

James J. Hellmold, a 25-year veteran of the Sheriff's Department, commands all of the Department's Patrol and Detective Divisions throughout Los Angeles County.

Assistant Sheriff Hellmold joined the Sheriff's Department in 1988. As a deputy, he received formal recognition in the cities of Long Beach and Bellflower for impacting street crime. He also served as a youth mentor at local foster homes and MacLaren Children's Center.

In 2000, he was promoted to Sergeant and assigned to the East Los Angeles and Compton Stations. He assisted in developing the Department's Long Term Strategic Plan and was a sergeant assigned to the Department's elite tactical unit known as the Special Enforcement Bureau, at the Canine Services Detail.

In 2005, Mr. Hellmold was promoted to Lieutenant, where he served as a watch commander at Compton Station during the peak of a violent crime surge. Within several years the violent crime in Compton was reduced to historic lows.

In 2007, Mr. Hellmold was promoted to Captain, where he commanded Century Station. During his tenure, the city of Lynwood received "All-American City" honors for historic crime reductions, community development, and the lowest number of homicides in nearly 50 years.

In 2011, Mr. Hellmold was promoted to Commander, where he was called into closely inspect jail operations and effect positive reforms throughout Los Angeles County.

Assistant Sheriff Hellmold holds a Bachelor's Degree from California State University, Fullerton and completed the Executive Leadership Program at Cornell University. He's been married to his wife Cheryl for 20 years. They enjoy snowboarding, wakeboarding, and other outdoor activities with their three sons Jacob, Joshua, and Jonah.

His community involvement includes more than 25 years of coaching youth football and baseball, working with at risk youth, volunteer work at the Compton Salvation Army, and support of homeless ministries throughout Los Angeles County.
