Smart Voter Additional Endorsements for Maggie Fleming

Candidate for
District Attorney; County of Humboldt

This information is provided by the candidate

Maggie Fleming represented my family in the prosecution of three young men who murdered my daughter on January 23, 1994 at the South Jetty. Maggie was deputy district attorney at the time and kept us informed every step through the trial that lasted 4 years. Maggie was the voice of Amber who lost hers when these young men robbed her life. From the moment my family stood in her professional presence Maggie was there to ease the pain. She explained and answered all our questions with an open mind and always made us feel cradled by her ability to present our case. She has the ability to communicate with passion and firmness, empathy and directness, and has years of experience. My family supports Maggie's decision to run for District Attorney and knows she is committed to making a difference in all our communities.

Francine Schulman
Amber Slaughter's mother

As retired Humboldt County judges, we endorse Maggie Fleming for District Attorney. We have observed Ms. Fleming for more than 20 years. Her unfailing professionalism, her hard work, her ethical pursuit of justice, her calm and courtesy in court no matter how tense things got and her willingness to assist other counsel distinguish her as a leader and an example for others.

Harold E. Neville, John Morrison, and J. Michael Brown
Retired Humboldt County Judges

It was a pleasure meeting with you last week. I enjoyed hearing of your vision for positive changes for the Humboldt County District Attorney's Office, and, in turn, explaining for you some of our policies and programs. As the incumbent District Attorney of the neighboring county to the south, please accept this letter as my endorsement of your candidacy to be Humboldt County's next elected prosecutor.

Beyond meeting with you, my due diligence has included reviewing the respective backgrounds, professional experience, and campaign "promises" of each of the candidates seeking to follow Paul Gallegos' tenure. Taking all things into consideration it was not difficult for me to conclude that the voters of Humboldt County are fortunate to have a woman of your integrity and diverse legal experience willing to serve as their elected District Attorney. Your prior experience as a successful prosecutor handling violent and difficult cases is simply unmatched by the others. Your "Guiding Principles," as posted on your web page, are also on point, and indicative that you will be ready to hit the ground running once elected.

Good luck in your campaign. I look forward to working collaboratively with you to promote public safety on both sides of our county line. If there is anything I can do to help you achieve your goals, please let me know.

C. David Eyster
District Attorney, Mendocino County

My vote/support for Maggie Fleming for DA is based on how she has treated the homeless and those with mental illness over the years. Maggie has proven again and again that no matter who you are, no matter what your income level is, she will do her best to ensure that you get the best representation possible. Maggie is fair, ethical and honest. I trust that Maggie will do a good job on behalf of all of us. She has the skills and experience we need in our next DA.

Pamlyn Millsap
Homeless/Mental Health Social Worker for over 20 years

I worked with Maggie Fleming for 17 years, all the while deeply impressed with her singular combination of intelligence, work ethic and acute sense of justice. She is uniformly respected throughout the local criminal justice community. Maggie's distinguished career as a prosecutor surpasses those of all the other candidates put together.

Serving for several years as the Assistant District Attorney, I supervised all four candidates as Deputy D. A.'s. Maggie Fleming's abilities and accomplishments as a prosecutor stand head and shoulders above all the others. I mean no disrespect to the others but Maggie is, simply and clearly, the best.

Wes Keat
Retired Assistant District Attorney for Humboldt County

Maggie Fleming's impeccable character has been revealed over her 25 years as a prosecutor. I have witnessed her tenacious pursuit of justice which has sent many violent and devious felons to prison. In her pursuit she does not lose her sensitivity to the needs of those who have been victimized by crimes. She truly cares to make Humboldt County a safer place to live, work, and raise a family. Maggie Fleming has the perfect balance of strength and compassion which makes her the best candidate for District Attorney.

William "Billy" Honsal
Former District Attorney Investigator, Current Undersheriff

I have been an attorney for more than 15 years in the public, private, and non-profit sectors and have never worked with another lawyer as uniformly well respected by her colleagues, superiors, opposing counsel, and the bench as Maggie Fleming. I started in the DA's office fresh out of law school, and from personal experience I know that young prosecutors can't find a better model or mentor than Maggie.

Maggie's intellect, integrity, professionalism, and experience make her an outstanding prosecutor. Her commitment to the county and to justice - the right outcome, whatever that is - make her the ideal choice for Humboldt County DA. I can't imagine a better person for the job.

Belinda (Bulger) Macauley
Former Deputy DA, Humboldt County

I have voted in every election since I moved to Eureka in 1966 with my husband Max. I read about the candidates who are running for office. I learn as much about their plans for public office and the professional philosophies that guide those plans as I can. And I pay close attention to their resumes and experience.

Maggie Fleming has over 25 years of experience as deputy district attorney and as deputy county counsel. She has tried over 120 cases, made hard decisions, successfully prosecuted all types of felonies. She is an outstanding candidate and will make an outstanding district attorney.

In all my voting years, I have seen no other candidate as well prepared for the office. I hope that all voters take the time to examine the resumes of all the candidates for district attorney. There is only one who has the experience, the ability, the nonpartisan temperament to do what must be done - Maggie Fleming. She will be a district attorney we can all be proud of.

Marge Custis
Eureka

I've worked with many fine prosecutors in my 32 years as a Deputy District Attorney for Humboldt County, but Maggie Fleming is the best of the best. Her clear understanding of the law, her tireless work ethic and her unflinching honesty and integrity have led to both outstanding success in the courtroom and widespread respect throughout the legal and law enforcement communities. She will be a great District Attorney and has my unqualified support.

Max Cardoza
Deputy District Attorney

As a long-time employee of the District Attorney's office, I have worked with and am well acquainted with all of the candidates in this year's election. There is simply no question who is the most qualified to be Humboldt County's District Attorney. Maggie Fleming has a depth of knowledge and experience not possessed by the other candidates. She is someone I could always go to with a tough question. Maggie is intelligent, approachable, ethical and honest. She's the best choice for District Attorney.

Marian Barnes Hancock
Legal Secretary, Humboldt County Office of the District Attorney

Maggie's reputation with our members who worked for her, as well as with her ... convinces us that she best represents the ideas held by working families. We believe she will bring to the office the ability to represent the need of justice for all people and the wisdom to understand that the administration of justice has a wide umbrella of remedies. We can highly recommend her for this office.

Timothy McDermond
President of the Humboldt County Public Employees' Union
AFSCME Council 57, Local 1684

I first met Maggie back in 2002 when I was a brand new prosecutor at the Humboldt office. I will forever remember the leadership, experience, skill, and ethics that Maggie helped teach me. I remember being told, "if you want to know the right way to do something, talk to Maggie." She was a great mentor. She was knowledgeable, approachable, and no matter how busy she was, she was always there when I needed help on a case. Her experience in the courtroom is unparalleled. Judges and police officers respect her, victims trust her, and the community was a better place to live in because of her hard work as a prosecutor. I unquestionably endorse Maggie for DA.

Zachary Bird
Deputy District Attorney, Sacramento

I worked at the District Attorney's office for 10 years, retiring in December 2012. I worked closely with the attorneys as I was the subpoena clerk responsible for notifying witnesses when they would be needed to testify in criminal trials and hearings. I trust Maggie Fleming. Maggie was one of the hardest working attorneys I had the pleasure to work with. Maggie was kind, respectful and courteous to all the people involved in testifying in her cases. She was diligent and thorough in letting everyone know when they needed to be there, and what was going on in the Courtroom. Maggie has experience, and strength and we need her here in Humboldt County. Please listen to the debates and the candidates on issues affecting our County. Maggie Fleming has my vote. I cannot think of a better person to lead us.

Katie Elsea
Subpoena Clerk Humboldt County D.A. Office, retired

I have been a Deputy District Attorney for over twelve years. I was fortunate enough to begin my career working with Maggie Fleming. She is the most ethical, hard working and skilled trial attorney I have ever known. She was a supportive and trusted leader with an unwavering commitment to justice. Happily, I support and endorse her to lead the office. Maggie Fleming will be an exceptional District Attorney for Humboldt County.

Frank Dunnick
Deputy District Attorney, Los Angeles
The views expressed are his own

In watching these campaigns unfold and evolve, I see words like "experience" and "professionalism." Yes, it's important that our next DA be both experienced and professional. But our DA must also be flexible enough to maintain relationships and communicate effectively with a wide array of county departments, public agencies, and both public and private defense attorneys - all while running an office of both seasoned and inexperienced deputy prosecutors.

To me, one candidate clearly stands out above the rest. That candidate is Maggie Fleming. I've had the pleasure of working with Maggie as a fellow board member of KEET-TV. I respect the leadership capabilities she brings to the board. Further, upon looking at all the candidate web sites, I feel that Maggie brings the type of management and mentorship needed in the DA's office.

I have no qualms whatsoever in recommending Maggie Fleming. Our county's legal system will be in good hands. I urge you to join me in electing Maggie as our next district attorney of Humboldt County.

Dennis Hunter
Eureka

Humboldt County needs Maggie Fleming to be the new District Attorney. Maggie is respected, trusted, and admired by judges, attorneys, and prosecutors across the state. I know because I have been a prosecutor since 2001. Maggie is fair, dedicated, and committed to justice. Maggie reflects the values, ideals, and diversity of Humboldt County. I support Maggie for DA.

Murat Ozgur
Senior Deputy District Attorney, Sex Crimes Prosecutor, Santa Clara

I worked with Maggie Fleming as part of the Child Abuse Services Team of Humboldt County from 1996-2003. This team brought state-of-the-art investigation techniques and vertical prosecution to cases involving our most vulnerable population; the children of Humboldt County. Vertical prosecution - one attorney from start to finish - is an essential tool for sensitive, complex cases. During the years I served as Child Interview Specialist I worked both in and out of court with Maggie - one of the senior prosecuting attorneys assigned to the team. I know firsthand that Maggie understands and values vertical prosecution. She knows that the dedicated attorney who prosecutes from beginning to end must be skilled at treating the victim in an ethical, respectful, and enduring manner. Even in the heat of trial, Maggie never lost sight of the children of these cases. As a result, her work served to facilitate healing as well as justice. Maggie's exceptional standards of professionalism, dedication and empathy will serve Humboldt County superbly when she is District Attorney.
