About me in greater detail

By Naomi Eason, Ed.

Candidate for County Superintendent of Schools; Alameda County Board of Education

This information is provided by the candidate
I am a mother of five children, three of whom are school-aged and enrolled in the Oakland Unified School District where I began my teaching career. Upon graduating from Mills College with my Bachelor's degree and teaching credential, I taught elementary school in both the Oakland Unified and Emery Unified School Districts where I focused on small group instruction to best meet the needs of all learners. While in Emery, I transitioned into a Reading Coach position where I provided support to teachers implementing the Open Court curriculum. I also served as a Middle School principal and as the Director of Underperforming Schools and Comprehensive School Reform while completing my Master's degree and Administrative Services Credential at California State University East Bay. During this time I also served as an Instructor for the Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQUE) providing workshops for parents at the elementary and middle school levels in the evenings to increase their knowledge about how the public school system operates and how to support maximum student achievement.

While working on my Doctorate in Educational Leadership at the University of the Pacific, I went to work for the California State University system. I served as a Learning Support Faculty member and was later promoted to an Associate Regional Center Director for the CalStateTEACH program, a multiple subject on-line credentialing program for candidates looking to earn their credential while simultaneously working in a classroom. While employed at the University, I focused my dissertation study on the profile of a successful student enrolled in a blended multiple subject credential program.

Upon graduation, I was recruited by the Alameda County Office of Education to serve as the Coordinator of New Teacher Program. This position oversaw the County Intern and Pre-Intern teacher programs which required coordination with multiple University programs. Soon thereafter, I was recruited to serve as the Interim Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services. After serving in this capacity for a period of time I was offered the permanent position of Assistant Superintendent. This position oversaw the Division of staff in charge of Professional Development in Curriculum and Instruction and Instructional Support Services for educators, administrators and parents throughout the County. In this role I oversaw five departments and all of the Regional Programs providing services throughout the seven Bay Area Region IV Counties. I chaired the Curriculum Council made up of all the District Assistant Superintendents throughout the County and chaired the Curriculum and Instruction Leadership Council (CILC) which included the other Assistant Superintendents at the neighboring County Offices. I served as an Executive Cabinet member under the direction of the Superintendent and implemented many initiatives including the Worksite Wellness Committee, California Department of Education (CDE) compliance initiatives including the Williams lawsuit, Valenzuela and the Quality Education Investment Act (QEIA). I oversaw the Early Assessment Program in partnership with California State University East Bay (CSUEB), oversaw the Distinguished School Recognition Program and lead the Parent Education Curriculum Module development. I oversaw the Division budget and attended and presented at Board of Education meetings. While in this position I also served on the CSUEB EdD Program Policy Review Board and was actively involved in the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA) subcommittee for County Assistant Superintendents, the Curriculum and Instruction Steering Committee (CISC). During my tenure, I served on the Executive Committee, as the Regional Lead, was the state-wide Reading Language Arts Chair which included co-facilitating the development of the Common Core Standards Toolkit, the Distinguished Schools Liaison, and chaired the Leadership Symposium: Dynamic Leadership for Sustainable Improvement: Building on our Assists.

Currently, I serve as the California Executive Director for BELL, Building Educated Leaders for Life, a nonprofit founded in 1992 designed to improve academic performance through targeted instruction in literacy and math, mentoring relationships with positive adult role models and opportunities to experience success and heighten aspirations through afterschool and summer school programming for K-8th graders.

I am running for County Superintendent of Schools in order to increase and align services to Districts throughout the County based on their needs with a targeted focus on the implementation of the Common Core State Standards, Local Control Funding and STEM education. Under my leadership I will also work with staff at the Court and Community Schools, including Juvenile Hall, in order to ensure that these students also receive a 21st Century education in order to help support a smooth transition back to their home District and as a way to help combat the recidivism rates.
