In addition to serving one term on our school board, I bring over 40 years of experience as a teacher and administrator.

On the school board, I've worked collaboratively to support Superintendent Chris Steinhauser and his team during a tough financial crisis. In July, I was elected President of the Board. Our teamwork and the commitment of teachers, principals, staff and parents contributed to the steady improvement of student test scores!

As Dean of the Library and Learning Resource Center at Cerritos College, I hired, supervised and evaluated faculty and support staff, managed large budgets, and promoted reading and educational technology to benefit students of diverse and rich cultures.

At Newport Harbor High School, after teaching English for 12 years, I became school librarian. In 1985, the Parent Teacher Association presented their Annual Service Award to me. In 1986, my school library won the John Cotton Dana International Library Award from the American Library Association.

In 2002, I was elected president of the California Academic and Research Library Association (CARL) whose membership includes UC's, CSU's, California Community Colleges and independent universities and colleges. In 1994, I was elected president of the California School Library Association (CSLA). I was also elected to the state boards of the Council of Chief Librarians-California Community Colleges, and the Learning Resources Association-California Community Colleges.

I was appointed to the State Policy Board of the California Reading and Literature Project (1994-97). I also served as the Governor's appointee to the State Board of the Education Council on Technology in Learning (1996-98), which oversaw Digital High School Grants and other technology funds.

While on leave from Newport-Mesa USD (1980-81), I served on the Orange County Grand Jury, where I chaired the General Services Committee. I authored two major reports. The first was on the county supervisors' acquisition of a new computerized vote counting system. The second was on the county's plan to expand John Wayne Airport.

I earned a Bachelor of Arts in English (1967) and Master of Arts in Communication Arts (1972) from Loyola University, Los Angeles (now Loyola Marymount University), and a Master of Science in Library Science from the University of Southern California (1981). I've been married to Dianne for over 45 years. We have two children, Michelle and Paul, who attended public schools from kindergarten through the University of California, Los Angeles.
