More Police on the Streets

By Stephen C. "Steve" Bello

Candidate for Member, City Council; City of Long Beach; District 3

Violent crime is decreasing, but property crimes are on the rise in our great city. How do we pay for more police?
We need to explore the possibility of raising more oil revenue through a higher oil tax as was set with proposition H in 2007. Currently with the high price of per barrel oil, a small tax increase per barrel to the city should not have a significant effect on our oil producer that we contract with. Of course this would take a vote of the people, but the process should be approximately 6 months. In addition, we should explore setting a higher floor price from $70.00 per barrel to $75.00 for the oil that we sell ourselves. This extra $5.00 equates to approximately $3,300,000 per year. We can put this extra $3,300,000 towards our recurring budget costs and not our 1 time expenditures. These millions of dollars can go towards adding more police officers to our streets.

In addition, we need to come together as a community. I had a discussion with East Side Commander Paul Le Baron. And he agrees that active community watch groups dramatically reduce property crimes. I will be working closely with the police department to grow our community based crime prevention that has been lacking over the past years.
