Risk Management

By Tim Rood

Candidate for Council Member; City of Piedmont

This information is provided by the candidate
I support adoption of the risk management policies proposed by the League of Women Voters of Piedmont.
In the past four years, Piedmonters have spent millions of tax dollars to address sudden and unanticipated expenses for major public works projects, including the Piedmont Hills utility undergrounding district and the now-abandoned Blair Park sports complex.

In the wake of these expensive failures of oversight, an expert panel appointed by the League of Women Voters of Piedmont, known as the Task Force for Good Governance, recommended that the City improve its management of risk by adopting policies requiring professional project management of major projects and prompt and complete reporting by staff of significant changes in project status.

A set of proposed procedures was developed by staff and discussed at the Jan. 22, 2013 City Council meeting, but tabled without Council action. At that meeting, the League presented a proposed set of risk management policies (later included in the Task Force's report) that it recommended the City adopt.

I believe these proposed risk management policies deserve a full, public debate as the Council takes up this unfinished business.
