I was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on January 22, 1954 to Mr. William A. Yates, Jr. and Ms. Jo Ann Dickerson (Yates). We lived for many years at 3270 Beresford Avenue in Walnut Hills. After graduating from Frederick Douglass Elementary School, I entered Walnut Hills Junior High School but I did not stay long. I went to live with my Aunt and Uncle on their farm in Mt.Orab, Ohio and I attended Green-Sterling Elementary School and Mt. Orab High School. I returned to Cincinnati in 1970, was elected Boy Mayor of Cincinnati in 1971, and graduated from Withrow High School in 1972. I graduated from the University of Cincinnati, as a loyal son, with a B.A. degree in History in 1978. During my university career, I was elected president of the University of Cincinnati student body and student representative to the U.C. Board of Trustees. I was privileged to be among a group of young people working to elect Councilman William J. Chenault. He took me under his wing and taught me many important lessons about government, politics, and life. It is to him that I owe my active beginning in politics and government. I was baptized at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in 1964 and have remained there since. Regarding my qualifications for judge, I have a degree in law from the University of Toledo College of Law, and have served as an Assistant Attorney General of Ohio, White, Getgey and Meyer, L.P.A. where I was an Associate, Trial Counsel in the Juvenile Division of the Hamilton County Public Defender's Office, Chairman of the Board of Cincinnati Citizens Committee on Youth, Member of the Ohio House of Representatives, and two terms as Vice-Mayor of Cincinnati and nearly nine years of service as a Member of Cincinnati City Council as both a Charterite and a Democrat, and in one election, endorsed by both the Charter Committee and the Hamilton County Democratic Party. I was appointed to the Hamilton County Municipal Court in 2010 by Governor Ted Strickland. And I was unopposed for election in 2011. I am running unopposed for the term beginning January, 2014 for a six year term. Important role models for me have been my parents and siblings and family and my beloveds, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence and Elsie Pierre, each of my teachers at Douglass Elementary School, Aunt and Uncle Mr. and Mrs. Paul and Virginia Wyly, My Aunt Bobbie Yates Corbean, Mr. and Mrs. Calvin Conliffe (Lazenby), Mr. Henry Lazenby, Mr. William Chenault, Dr. Ronald J. Temple and Attorney Juanita Simpson Temple,, Dr. and Mrs. John H. Coleman (Joan), Brothers Mayor Michael, David, Dr. Linda and Jeffrey Coleman Professor Jay C. Heinlein, dear friend and teacher Roger Stephens and wife Nancy, mentor, patron and friend Marylyn J. Smith, Dr. Janet B. Reid, Veronica Chapman, Governor John J. Gilligan, Brother John P. Gilligan and Family, Mayor Theodore M. Berry, Mr.James Meredith, John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy and Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. I owe a significant debt to the members and leaders of the Hamilton County Democratic Party and to the citizens of Cincinnati. Thank you for your continued faith and support. I have been very lucky in my life thanks to you.
