  • Alan has served as a Trustee for the Sequoia Union High School District since 2009

  • Alan represents the SUHSD Board on the Redwood City 2020 Coordinating Council, the SUHSD / Ravenswood / City of East Palo Alto 2x2x2 Committee, the 4 Corners Traffic Committee (SUHSD, San Carlos School District, City of Belmont, City of San Carlos), the SUHSD Career and Technical Education Task Force, and the SUHSD Capacity Planning Task Force.

  • Alan completed the California School Boards Association Masters of Governance program in 2011, and has attended numerous CSBA and NSBA (National School Boards Association) conferences since 2009.

  • Alan founded and manages the Music Mentor program, where Carlmont High School students tutor Elementary and Middle School students in Belmont and Redwood Shores. This program is now in its 10th year. As a SUHSD Board member, Alan has encouraged the development of additional Music Mentor programs between Sequoia and Woodside High Schools and McKinley and Kennedy Middle Schools in the Redwood City School District.

  • Alan is Chair of the Save the Music Festival, in his ninth year. Save the Music raises funds that each year prevented loss of the Elementary Music curriculum from the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District

  • Alan was a Board member of the Carlmont Academic Foundation for 8 years, the final 3 as President. The Carlmont Academic Foundation has provided critical funding to launch numerous Career Pathway programs, and support innovative educational practices to benefit all students

  • Alan was named Volunteer of the Year in 2008 by the Sequoia Union High School District.

  • Alan represented Carlmont High School on the committee for the successful Sequoia Union High School District Measure J Bond. Funds from Measure J are bringing critical facilities improvements to the schools of the district, to keep our schools competitive for the 21st Century

  • Alan co-chaired the successful Measure G Parcel Tax campaign in the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District. Measure G funding has kept libraries, reading specialists, science specialists, music teachers, and many other key resources in our schools

  • Alan chaired the Carlmont Advocates for the Performing Arts for four years, providing support for the Instrumental Music program, including fundraising, trip planning, facilities management, performance support, and transportation.

  • Alan chaired the Music Boosters at Ralston Middle School for 2 years. He organized fundraising, and coordinated a musical exchange program for Ralston students with Belmont's sister city of Namur, Belgium

Alan's background...

Alan earned a B.A. in Sociology and his Teaching Credential from U.C. San Diego in 1976 and then worked as an Elementary teacher. He later entered a high tech career, leading projects and developing software products for local and global use. Since retiring as Director of Product Management at Oracle Corporation 11 years ago, Alan has worked tirelessly for the public schools of San Mateo County.

Family...

  • Alan's wife, Emily, has been a PTA leader for local Elementary, Middle, and High Schools, and for the 17th District (San Mateo County) PTA. Emily also volunteers at the regional level for Girl Scouts, and is a key supporter of the Carlmont Music Mentor Program.

  • Their daughters, Ariel and Hannah, are both graduates of Carlmont High School. Ariel graduated U.C. Davis in 2010, and the Stanford Teacher Education Program in 2012. Hannah graduated Olin College of Engineering in 2013. Ariel began her career as a High School English Teacher in 2012, and Hannah began her Computer Science career in the fall of 2013.
