Key Reasons I am running for re-election to the Belmont City Council

By Warren Lieberman

Candidate for Council Member; City of Belmont

Working together, we've accomplished much since I was elected to the Belmont City Council in 2005 and re-elected in 2009.

Prudent fiscal management enabled Belmont to avoid making the extensive service cuts required in other cities. My Ph.D. in Operations Research and my five years as a Belmont Finance Commissioner provide great value when setting Belmont's budget. My detailed knowledge of Belmont's historical financial agreements helped me negotiate an agreement to save Belmont's residents millions of dollars as we replace our deteriorating sewage treatment infrastructure.

Here are a few of my priorities:

1. Belmont Fire Department

A 2009 priority of mine, Belmont's Fire Department is now stable! A Joint Operating Agreement with San Mateo and Foster City is yielding significant operating and economic efficiencies; Belmont is well positioned with first class medical and emergency services now and into the future. I have championed the idea of working together with neighboring communities in innovative ways and benefitting from regional best practices; our efforts with the Belmont Fire Department have proven very successful.

2. Parks, Recreation, Open Spaces, and Sports

With community support, user fees continue to fund noticeable improvements in the conditions of our parks and sports fields. The efforts of our Little League All-Stars, who made history by winning the Northern California Championship, remind us of our responsibility for protecting and enhancing our recreational spaces to ensure that diverse opportunities are available for all. Our acquisition of parcels in the San Juan Canyon to limit development in favor of open space is an example of creative strategies we've employed to secure Belmont's future as a Green City

3. Smart Economic Development

For Belmont to thrive, it is critical that the businesses in our community succeed. The City has the responsibility to ensure that the necessary conditions for this exist while insuring we do so in a manner that promotes the sense of a "village" that so many in Belmont want.

4. Infrastructure

I will focus on creative strategies to improve our roads, which as we all know, need a lot of work! I will continue to work for increasing the "walkability" of our city.

5. Outreach

I have consistently advocated for community outreach and initiated programs such as Community Lunches with the Mayor. My goal is to represent and work hard on behalf of all of Belmont's residents.
