Candidate Biography

By Gavin Kelly Escolar

Candidate for Council Member; City of Brisbane

This information is provided by the candidate
I want to get to know you and listen on what you want to say
I am a long-time bay area resident and a community advocate, with a broad mix of international, non-profit, and entrepreneurial business experience. Becoming a Brisbane resident is my American dream fulfilled and as a mixed race immigrant from the Philippines raised by a single mother, I look at Brisbane as a welcoming city for a man who aspires to make a difference.

My life experiences have created in me a strong desire and deep obligation to give back to my neighbors and to my community. Over the years, I have put my education, knowledge and skills to help a wide variety of small businesses procure funding, generate and revise business plans and find resources to help them grow and succeed. These same skills and experiences I feel will help me understand and come up with viable and creative solutions to many of the obstacles Brisbane is currently facing.

I believe as a City Council member one should listen to all the different perspectives and opinions on an issue and then provide both practical and creative solutions to them. I am committed to bring all my energy, knowledge, passion and open mindness to the City Council of Brisbane so all of its citizens are being represented and heard.

I am an outgoing, dedicated, entrepreneurial, down to earth, friendly and dedicated citizen with a deep sense of civic duty and pride. Over the years I have given back to the my local community in a variety of ways:

Through my art and the shows that I have had in local galleries and shops to display my works.

Through a non-profit called Canvas that advocates for worldwide children's literacy by giving away over one million books to one million kids.

Through my artist studios and workshops that provided sustainable, well paying employment to poor, underprivileged citizens in developing countries.

By using micro financing and group funding that helped procure equipment, resources and education to entrepreneurs seeking to start small food stand businesses around the world.

If elected to Brisbane's city council, my top priorities are to:

Provide eco-friendly and sustainable economic development that maintains a strong, unwavering focus on Brisbane small-town atmosphere.

Keep our city safe and family friendly by devoting Brisbane's resources towards, education, safety and quality recreation.

Encourage open communication between Brisbane's citizens and the city council by fostering a responsive government that listens to and understands the needs of its constituents

With the aforementioned priorities, I see many opportunities to provide a more efficient and better quality government to Brisbane's residents. I would like to develop a healthy, honest, and ongoing communication between Brisbane residents and the city government in order to collaborate on a wide range of issues ranging from having increasing community recreation to enriching our school's educational programs.

I respectfully ask for your vote in order to meet the many challenges and decisions Brisbane is facing. Together we can guide our beautiful and unique city into a prosperous and glorious future.
