Portola Valley was founded almost 50 years ago to preserve the paradise residents knew they had. Most of us who now reside here still feel the rural quality to be extremely important and its protection our priority. We also place a high value on maintaining a family-oriented environment with an emphasis on great community schools. These key values are woven throughout our General Plan and should shape our decisions.

Small and open government, supplemented by volunteers, was a hallmark of our founders and over the years has worked well. I believe in a limited Town government that focuses on the basics of public safety, public works, necessary administrative functions, and sound budgeting. It should gauge the interests and priorities of its citizens and families and act to support them.

We must ensure our decision making process is transparent, efficient, and favors evidence over emotion.

There should be an awareness of unintended consequences to property owners when regulations are proposed. Why make a regulation when educating the public on the right thing to do or offering incentives would suffice? Unnecessary mandates can also increase our Town's administrative burden.

Our government should do what it needs to do and not much more.
