BIO-RESUME

By Nirmala I Bandrapalli

Candidate for Council Member; City of Burlingame

This information is provided by the candidate
In responding to Burlingame residents about the critical issues that affect them, I focus on getting beyond sound bites and providing practical solutions. I have listened carefully, and have developed comprehensive positions for tackling some of Burlingame's greatest challenges. Using my long experience in community service and my project manager mindset, I have tried to think creatively and articulate clear ideas--both generally and on a very granular level. Here are just a few new ideas for improving our city in some very specific ways.

  • Responding to all residents' complaints, suggestions and requests for service within 48 hours via a new online system that tracks trends and identifies bottlenecks--as part of a broad program of creating new and improved communication channels between city government and Burlingame residents

  • Improving our parking problem in downtown Burlingame by incentivizing store employees to park at lots farthest from the center of town, reducing congestion and freeing up those sought-after spaces for shoppers

  • Expanding transportation options for seniors, including a "senior taxi" system that coordinates rides for older residents who can no longer drive (funded by private donations of used vehicles and/or cash)

For an issue-by-issue discussion on matters relating to transportation, housing, preservation and development, environment and sustainability, community services, communication and transparency, and senior issues, I invite you to check out my web site: http://www.nirmala4burlingame.com. Whether it's parking downtown, reducing our carbon footprint, or increasing efficiency in city government, I offer practical ideas for your consideration.

During the past eight years in Burlingame, I have stepped forward to lead in several community service organizations. My approach is straightforward: identify problems, listen to people, get them to collaborate and--here's the key--develop and carry out a workable plan that solves problems.

As a board member of Burlingame Community for Education, I used my IT experience to streamline the auction process. As a member of Lincoln's School Site Council and Lincoln's representative on the School District Advisory Committee, I automated the school's online registration process and helped generate a new plan for increasing student achievement. I have also served on the board of the Burlingame Mothers' Club, organized my neighborhood for emergency preparedness, and helped girls learn about the environment and sustainability in my role as a Girl Scout Unit leader.

In addition, I co-founded a nonprofit called Science Gurus that provides science-based training, mentoring and internship opportunities that help high school students pursue careers in the Life Sciences.

I'm a busy wife and mother of three who, as you should expect, puts my family and the wellbeing and education of my children first. But that has not stopped me from starting and running my own health and fitness business, as well as doing as much as I can do to serve my community, Burlingame.

I also have professional experience that will serve our city well, including 11 years in research and analysis positions at Genentech and five years working at a San Francisco facility serving the needs of seniors. I did AIDS research at the Gladstone Institute of Virology and Immunology, and published my work in prominent research journals. I have a Master's Degree in Biochemistry from USF and Project Management Professional certification.
