Knowledgeable Public Servant

With six years on the Mill Valley Planning Commission, John has extensive local housing and land use experience. He chaired a major subcommittee of the general plan, Mill Valley 2040 and also served on the Miller Avenue redesign to meet the needs of pedestrians, bicyclists and motorists.

John has presided at nearly 200 meetings in his roles as planning commissioner and on public committees. He understands the public process and how the city works. This is important, as over the next two years our whole City Council will likely turn over.

The city has been well run, but with infrastructure upgrades needed and continued challenges with the budget, John's dedication and skills are attributes the City Council could use. He knows how the public process should work and how to integrate good ideas from the public into future City policy and initiatives.

Proven Manager of People and Budgets

In 35 years at PricewaterhouseCoopers, a large public accounting firm, John successfully managed a 300-person team and a $100 million budget, retiring as a partner in 2010. John was a consensus-builder, leading his team through the challenges of both recession and high-pressure growth, creating a culture of quality, trust and enthusiasm.

As a result of his success, John was subsequently hired at his alma mater, UC Berkeley, as a Professor at the Haas School of Business.

In these difficult times when balancing limited resources and expansive priorities is a must, John's technical knowledge of budgeting, finance and local government will be instrumental to keeping our city on the right track.

Deep Roots in the Community

John understands what is important to our neighborhoods and families. John and his wife, Cindy, have been proud Mill Valley residents for nearly 30 years. Their two kids graduated from Mill Valley public schools, and Cindy is a Tam High School District board trustee.

John was a regular on the set-up and cleanup committees for almost every school fundraiser held for Old Mill School, Mill Valley Middle School and Tam High School during the 15 years his kids were in the school system. He garnered a reputation as the "Grill Master," serving all the Old Mill kids during their annual "Lapathon" fundraiser. John has been an active supporter of the Mill Valley soccer club, local businesses and the arts.

When not teaching or serving the City, John and Cindy love traveling, bicycling, hiking, taking cooking classes and skiing in Tahoe. John is a huge 49ers fan, with season tickets and a well-earned reputation for his elaborate tailgates. He collects vinyl records, and enjoys music and theater downtown. He likes using the steps-lanes-and-path network to walk his dog and to meet friends for coffee or a beer downtown.

John has deep roots here, and that's why he's committed to preserving what makes Mill Valley so special.
