TRANSPORTATION AND THE GREENBRAE/101 CORRIDOR

By Kevin T. Haroff

Candidate for Council Member; City of Larkspur

This information is provided by the candidate
Focusing on the need to address the community's growing traffic circulation and congestion issues.
We need an integrated approach toward transportation management that supports a variety of options (including improved bus services, pedestrian and bicycle rights of way) to minimize reliance on automobile use within Larkspur and Greenbrae. At the same time, when encouraging different alternatives, it is important to be realistic about how extensively they are likely to be used + with an aging population, not everyone will be willing or able to ride a bike to neighborhood stores and other public facilities. Golden Gate Transit's latest effort to provide free bus service (for commuters) along Sir Francis Drake Boulevard to the ferry terminal at Larkspur Landing is commendable, and we should encourage expansions of dedicated commuter parking at the Bon Air Shopping Center and other locations along that route. We also should support expanded local bus services by both Golden Gate Transit and Marin Transit throughout Larkspur, Corte Madera, and Kentfield.

With respect to the Greenbrae/101 corridor, the original TAM Build Project was too costly, lacked public support, and only reinforced negative trends toward urbanization of our community. At the same time, the most recently approved proposals may not do much to address the most important issue facing the Project: how to effectively address the traffic flow to and from the Richmond Bridge. We need a more effective, regional planning effort, with the full involvement and support of Caltrans, to address the issues in a comprehensive way (including, without limitation, further consideration of direct connections between 101 and 580).
