Doug grew up in Southern California, graduated from the University of Redlands with a BS in Chemistry with minors in Physics and Mathmatics. He taught mathmatics in Southern California and was Headmaster of a high school in Kingston,Jamaica. During his college career, his summers found him at work in Emergency Rooms as a nurse's aid. His graduate school days found him at work on the Neuro unit at Loma Linda Hospital and working as an amubulance attendant. He assisted in providing medical aid in the CalFire fire camps as a member of a San Bernardion Search and Rescue team. He moved to Half Moon Bay in 1980, where he and his brother-in-law, own and operate Strawflower Electronics. He is married and has six children and nine grandchildren.

He has worked in Little League as an umpire and has been priviledged to be a member of the Half Moon Bay Rotary. He has served his church as a youth counselor and currently sits as a member of the denomination's Memorial Fund Board of Directors.

He has served the Fire District as Presidentof the board and as a member of several committees including the finance committee. He has helped supervise the construction of the Half Moon Bay station, helping to establish a philosophy of station building that brought the building in under what others were paying and without needing to go to bond for construction money. He has helped establish a funding philosphy which has saved the District by paying cash for major purchases, reducing prices and paying no or minimal loan interest. This has allowed the District to run in the black for over twenty years.
