Dynamic School District - Our Students and Teachers Need Help

By Mark S. Littleton, Jr.

Candidate for Council Member; City of Simi Valley

This information is provided by the candidate
Regardless of how you feel about pensions, our teachers are over loaded, most of our classes are filled to the maximum amount allowed by State law.  Our City Council proposes at a Heroin Task Force meeting that our Teachers need to be responsible for busting the kids who are high on drugs. So, we are asking them to teach and be the drug police as well. That is crazy when they are there to teach our kids and prepare them for the future.
I am against the hiring of incompetent teachers. I am for firing teachers for under-performing. That said, I certainly do not expect them to be the drug police. I expect a good solid education for our kids. If I could I would do something about the outdated curriculum but that is something I hope our school board and Unions can work out.

I will encourage the City Council to take more responsibility for our school system and have healthy, proactive discussions regarding school related issues.

Work to build a stronger team relationship between the City Council and the School District Leaders along with the PTA and the unions.

I believe we need to provide our teachers with the most cutting edge information technology tools to be able to keep up with what our children are using today. Example, if a teacher has 1 or 2 five year old computers in the class and they are too slow or inadequate to keep up with on-demand research, technology goes out the door and we go back to archaic lectures that do not keep the kids engaged in class. Obviously this isn't the case in every situation. But today's student body needs more and more stimulation to stay interested in school.
