Smart Voter Political Philosophy for Debra A. Mills

Candidate for
Board Member; Bellevue Union School District

This information is provided by the candidate

Where is our educational system going? I ask myself that daily as I take my son to one of our district elementary schools each day. I look at the children and the people that I represent as I sit as a current board member. I did not realize that this job was more than I have ever done before, and that my passion for doing it would grow exponentially as the years past.

You see there is a definite learning curve when you are on a school board. I spent my first two years while serving on the board, in the California School Board Association, "Masters in Governance" program, and I only in my last two years of serving have been able to clearly see the necessary road that needs to be traveled to keep education moving. We have made many wonderful changes in our district. Our scores are continuing to climb, our facilities are being upgraded, and our students feel safe. However, there is so much more that is needed. School districts are complex. From the laws of education that need to be enforced to the bills that need to be paid. It leaves not enough time to filter all the little things that make children's days successful and meaningful. This economic pit fall that education is in, is devastating. Not knowing if we will have funds for busing, or to keep extracurricular programs going is horrific. Many do not understand or may not be aware of how much education is suffering.

I want to continue to fight for educational dollars. I want to help student achieve their goals and become the people they want to be. I want to keep the fiscal integrity of our district from becoming an empty hole. I have a list of many things I want to do, even after my son leaves our schools. I hope that you would allow me to continue my drive to make our district the best it can be.
