Statement for the Office of Harbor Commissioner

By Pietro Parravano

Candidate for Commissioner; San Mateo County Harbor District

This information is provided by the candidate
Clean oceans, sustainable fisheries, public access, thriving coastal communities
I have resided in San Mateo County since 1978. I have a graduate level degree in biology and taught science at Woodside Priory School.

Since becoming a fisherman in 1982, I know the importance of preserving our cultural, social and economic values. My focus has been on citizen access to the ocean and San Francisco Bay through our harbors for recreation, education, food production and now, transportation. As a member of the Gulf of the Farallones Marine Sanctuary panel I hope to bring a visitor center to the Harbor. I have testified as an expert on ocean policy and sustainable seafood issues.

I have served as President of the region's largest fishing organization. I was one of 18 individuals selected to serve on the Pew National Oceans Commission and have been recognized by the U.S. President for my accomplishments in marine conservation.

I participate in the Gulf of the Farallones Marine Sanctuary's "Fisherman in the Classroom". I helped start programs sponsored by the San Mateo County Visitors and Convention Bureau and the HMB Farm Bureau such as "As Fresh As It Gets" at Pillar Pt. Harbor. I was the keynote speaker for the Sustainable San Mateo County 2012 awards dinner. I conduct tours at Pillar Pt. Harbor for culinary students and eco-tourism with the Coastside Chamber of Commerce. During my tenure on the Harbor Commission we established a successful opportunity for people to purchase fresh caught fish directly from the boats. As Commissioner, I introduced a resolution that emphasizes using wild salmon at all District facilities. I serve as Chair of the Community Advisory Board of Seton Coastside Hospital. I was invited to Google headquarters and spoke with their executive chefs about the local sourcing of seafood and sustainable fisheries. Last July, I was asked by Google to participate on a panel for sustainable seafood. Last year, Google asked me to assist them with the start up of a Community Supported Fisheries (CSF) with the fishermen at Pillar Pt. Harbor and the employees at Google.

My dedication and commitment to the marine environment, sustainable fishing practices, coastal communities and marine resources has been recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency, National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, National Fisherman, Half Moon Bay, San Mateo County Board of Supervisors, California legislature and United States Congress.

I am seeking re-election to continue the work I began on the Commission and further foster new education opportunities, sustainable fisheries and continuing access and enjoyment of our communities to their fish, coastal and San Francisco Bay resources. My intention is to continue to provide the best services and opportunities that the harbors have to offer. My commitment is to enhance and promote economically vital harbors for the benefit of all user groups and to maintain a clean natural setting for all to enjoy. I will continue to educate and connect the public with the inspiring and unique marine environment that surrounds San Mateo County.
