By Jo Medina-Alegria

Candidate for Board Member; Cajon Valley Union School District

This information is provided by the candidate
Jo Medina Alegria has a genuine passion for youth. She has served on numerous community boards and councils in East County. She spearheaded and developed the After School Program at Dehesa School District in 1998 and ran this revenue earning program for the district until she left in 2005. In 1999 she was the recipient of the Dehesa School Classified Employee of the Year Award, and served two terms as her schools Union Representative. She has participated on the School Site Council, Parents Club, and Chairperson for various school events. Mrs. Medina-Alegria has also served 4 years as a board member, executive board member and as the Eligibility Director for Steele Canyon Youth Football in Rancho San Diego. She has also completed a term on Steele Canyon High School Athletics Boosters as the secretary. Mrs. Medina Alegria holds a degree in paralegal studies, and worked many years in the field of family and workers compensation law. Jo is seeking to continue her service to this community's children and families as the newest member of the Cajon Valley Unified School District Board.

Her inspiration to serve in public office is her father, an immigrant who joined the US Navy after fighting the Japanese in the jungles of the Philippines as a teenager during WWII. Her father (ret) Master Chief Roberto "Bob" Medina earned his citizenship and continued to serve his new country not only 20 years in the military, but also after. He helped pioneer numerous community organization groups in San Diego County, eventually settling in El Cajon spending the last 16 years of public service as a Field Representative specializing in military constituents for Congressman Duncan Hunter until he retired in 1994.

Jo's lifetime has been influenced by strong leadership. Her desire is to bring those leadership skills into action for our children. Currently, Jo has been nominated to serve on the Board of Deaconesses for Shadow Mountain Community Church and is also working with the East County Pregnancy Care Clinic in conjunction with her church and several churches in the community in ushering healing to post-abortive women. Jo has been married to Charlie for 23 years and together they have raised 4 sons. Their oldest son Andrew and wife Molly are the proud parents of their first grandson Levi Christian.
